European Short Course Championships 2019

The European Short Course Championships happens every 2 years in December.

For Irish athletes it’s an opportunity to race against the very best in Europe without the pressure of funding or future team selection riding on your performance.

In a season that has Irish Olympic Trials, European Long Course and potentially the Olympics at the end of it, this may not be the most important meet if the year. It is however I vital opportunity to race and gives a nice mid season punctuation before transitioning to the long course season.

Team Larne had 2 athletes selected to represent Ireland on this meet.

Danielle Hill (50, 100 BC, 50, 100 FREE)

Conor Ferguson (50, 100, 200 BC)

The team travelled from Belfast on Monday the 2nd. A training session on Tuesday then racing started on Wednesday 4th.

Day 1

Danielle 100 BC

You really can’t ask for too much more than stepping up on the 1st morning and posting a best time. This is exactly what D did breaking the minute for the 1st time. This was good enough to qualify for the semi final and just missed the Irish record by 0.08.

In the Semi that afternoon, for me, she produced the swim of the week. Lowering the National Standard to a world class 58.6 just missing out on the final.

Conor 200 BC

This was a switch in focus for Conor this season and he recorded his fastest ever heat swim and 2nd fastest 200. Just missing out on a tough qualification as with no Semi Finals only top 8 progress.

Day 2

Danielle 100 FREE

The heats produced yet another personal best time for Danielle in what is her 4th choice event.

Conor 100 BC

Another great heat swim saw Conor record his 1st PB in this event in 2 years and break his own Ulster Senior Record.

Day 3

Mixed FS relay

Both Danielle and Conor has a day off from individual events with a warm up and paddle in the morning and the D was on the mixed Free relay with Shane Ryan, Jordan Sloan and Mona McSharry. Swimming on the 3rd leg she posted a 24.0 and helping the team secure a final place. This is the 1st national relay to qualify for a senior international final.

In the final the team placed 8th and while Shane broke the Senior FS record on the 1st leg Danielle again went 24.0 and the team broke the Irish senior record.

Day 4

Danielle 50 BC

Having broken the 50BC record 3 weeks ago at BUCS, Danielle swam the heats looking to move up the ranking list and progress to the next round. A time of 26.92 did just that breaking the Irish record again becoming the 1st Irish female under 27 seconds.

At European level the heats, semi and final of 50 events happen in the same day so it was back that night for the semi of the 50 back and an incredible swim of 26.74 smashes the new record and finished top 10 and just outside the final spots.

Mixed medley

Both Conor and Danielle were selected for this team with Conor on the lead of leg and Danielle on the glory leg at the end. Conor posted a seasons best and D once again produced a 24.0 to secure a final spot. In the Final the team once again broke the Irish Senior record.

Day 5

The last day of a long meet can be a tough one to get right with tired bodies and minds that are harder to focus so it’s important to stick to your routines and focus on the process.

Danielle 50 FREE

This record has been switch back and forth between D and Mona for about 2 years now. Each time they break it they lower it by a few hundredths. At BUCS D lowered Mona’s time of 50.03 to 25.00.

The heats saw Danielle produce a new mark of 24.7 to become the fastest female in Irish history and move thru to the semi final. As if that wasn’t enough she then produced an even better swim to lower the Irish standard to 24.44 agonisingly close to getting a 3rd swim finishing in a tie for 9th.

Conor 50 BC

The men’s 50 BC is always incredibly tight and in a blanket finish Conors time of 23.86 was just outside the top 16 places.

Mens medley relay

Conor is staking a claim for the lead out legs of the men’s medley events and will have done himself no harm at all touching in 23.66 (a new Ulster senior record and a time that wud have progressed to the semi final of the individual) helping the team of Darragh Greene, Shane Ryan and Jordan Sloan set a new Irish mark.

High drama in the last final of the week saw 3 teams disqualified and the Irish finish in 6th

Women’s Medley relay.

Danielle’s spot at the Backstroke lead off is secured and she delivered again with a great swim to help the team set yet another Irish senior record.

A fantastic week of racing and confidence building heading into the next block of work and heading to trials in April.

PTL v Banbridge

The latest round in PTL saw #teamlarne travel to Banbridge to take on the local team.

As always the growing team spirit was evident by the travelling team.

The overall result was the 1st defeat of the year for #teamlarne however the skills on display by the entire club are a sign of the improvements being made across the whole club.

Special mention from the junior club for Daniel Beggs and Louisa Humphries who performed really well.

As always the senior club continued to demonstrate that they are a force to be reckoned with at this level.

Ulster Short Course 2019

25 swimmers from #teamlarne competed at the Swim Ulster Regional Championships over the weekend.

A fantastic team atmosphere was on display across the whole weekend as athletes stepped up and produced season best performances across the whole weekend

Athletes ranging from Ulster Junior record holders and World Championship Athletes to those competing for the very 1st time.

The important thing for everyone is a commitment to focus on the process and to not judge performances by times alone. The ‘how’ is far more important at this stage.

The work on racing skills is definitely starting to pay off and the effort to race in the right way was clear to see from all.

It is a long season and this is very much just the start …….. But a good start.

BUCS SC Swimming Championships 2019

What a year 2019 has been for Danielle Hill. Coming off an incredibly strong end to last season the #teamlarne ambassador picked up exactly where she left off with her 1st competitive outting of the season.

The British University and College Sports Short Course Swimming Championships held this weekend ment that Danielle wasn’t able to compete in the Ulster Championships however she was able to test herself against higher standard of opposition in Sheffield.

Racing in both the 50 free and 50 back Danielle headed off to race ‘in season’ before resting to compete at the European Short Course in Glasgow in 2 weeks.

The morning heats were a challenging affair with a large entry meaning that the girls had no Backstroke ledges and the heats were alternating with the boys heats.

Having safely negotiated the heats Danielle proceeded to lower the Irish senior record in the 50BC to 27.12 knocking over a second off her own time and 0.8 of the pervious record.

The 50 free also produces a new standard for Irish swimming with a time of 25.00 (with a slightly dodgy finish 😁)

The 1st box firmly ticked now we move on to Glasgow in December

Larne Sprints 2019

Back in the day (maybe 20 years ago) Larne Swimming Club hosted a traditional curtain raiser to the season.

It was an opportunity for swimmers to dust off the cobwebs and have some fun early each year.

Take your marks…….

This year we took the decision to resurrect this name from the past.

We made a few changes to the original format and switched to a junior meet however the principle was the same, the swim fast blow off the cobwebs anf have some fun.

On the 2nd or November the 1st Larne Sprints in 20 years took place in Larne Leisure center.

19 clubs from across the province entered over 300 swimmers for a combined 1250 swims.

We were incredible grateful to receive local sponsorship from Lidl, Subway Dominos, Woodside and our main sponsor Allsop.

The 1st session comprised of 25m swims in all strokes and was for swimmers 10years and under. Giving these young athletes their 1st experience of the competitive environment is a vital part of their education. Making sure that this experience is enjoyable and rewarding is essential and thanks to the efforts of the committee and parents and especially the older swimmers from the national squad everyone left the pool with a smile on their faces.

The 2nd part of the day was for the older athletes with the under 15 age taking over. For many this was a last opportunity to qualify for the upcoming Ulster Short Course Championships.

With some fantastic racing and a huge number of PBs this meet will become a fixture in the Swim Ulster Calendar over the next few years.

PTL v Newry & Mourne

The PTL season is in full swing now with the 2nd league fixture of the season (and the 1st away meet) tonight in Newry.

The new pool in Newry is a fantastic 8 lane facility and a great place to race.

The home team were fantastic hosts providing a great atmosphere and an unreal supper afterwards 👍😁

The league format is the same in every meet with Medley relays, Back, Breast, Fly Free and IM as well as Freestyle relays across 4 age bands.

As a team we use the PTL to rehearse racing skills under race conditions polishing starts, turns and finishes. Making sure that when the season reaches its climax we are as ready as possible.

The meet finished with a great win for #teamlarne and as always a fantastic team atmosphere on display.

Swim Ulster Autumn Qualifier 2019

We grow champions

The ‘season proper’ finally got underway this weekend with the 1st Regional Qualifier for #teamlarne.

Swimmers who were looking for qualifying times for Ulster Championships (or simply wanting to get the 1st races if the season under their belt) descended on Lisburn Leisureplex for 2 days of racing.

After 8 weeks of training, working on improving some skills and some base aerobic training it is good to see that some of the work that has been laid down has started to pay off.

New year, New commitment to excellence

‘We are what we repeatedly do’ 

Aristotle
Habit, like genius, is merely a matter of doggedness and deliberate practice. Which brings us to the second part of that Aristotle quote

‘Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit’

The new year is traditionally a time when we resolve to do better, do more, work harder, improve ourselves. But realistically unless there is a doggedness, a relentless approach too these resolutions they are destined for failure.

Highly successful people habitually perform behaviours that breed success, they have learnt to develop good habits, it takes discipline, courage and hard work on a daily basis to keep those habits in place. Everything from eating well to spending time completing tasks (training) requires habits that make these things are part of our lives.

As athletes at the start of your career it makes sense to adopt habits that facilitate success.

Take a leaf out of the books of some sports stars

Michael Jordan – spent his off season taking hundreds of jump shots a day

Roy Halladay (baseball) – does a 90 minute workout before team practice

Serena Williams – put in hours of extra training before school

Unfortunately there is no magic length of time to form a habit, but if you want 2017 to be a success you do need to start

Making the decision to set your sigets on a goal and press forwards towards its achievement is the start. It won’t be easy, but nothing worthwhile ever is. 

There are 3 phases of successfully forming a habit

Phase 1: THE HONEYMOON

At the beginning when your motivation is fresh and your feeling inspired the feeling is that this is easy 

Phase 2: THE TESTS

When inspiration fades and reality sets in and it feels easier to slip back into old routines the key to making it to phase three is to win these fight thru’s. 

To win these internal arguments try this

RECOGNIZE: Recognition that your are being tested is vital to passing each test. When you face these tests, simply say to yourself, “this is a test, and I am going to pass it and move on” passing each test will make it easier to win the next. Conversely, when you choose to stay in bed, you make it easier to always choose to stay in bed

ASK 2 QUESTIONS:
“How will I feel if I do this
“How will I feel if I don’t do this?”
Bring EMOTION into the equation. Let yourself feel the positive in getting out of bed and going to the pool and the negative in rolling over for more sleep

LIFE PROJECTION: If the above 2 techniques haven’t moved you to get out of bed, then imagine in great detail how you are going to feel on race day if you don’t achieve your goals. Be totally honest with yourself, and allow yourself to feel how your are going to feel if you don’t make the effort to achieve YOUR goals

Phase 3: SECOND NATURE

Often described as being ‘in the groove’, there is still the danger of interruptions sending you back to testing times

THE DISCOURAGEMENT MONSTER: Results won’t always go your way, there are going to be poor races or disappointments the risk is that you allow these to discourage you and start thinking

DISRUPTIONS: A change to your daily pattern (e.g., vacations, holidays, illness, weekends) can cause a spiral into the easier ‘just start in bed today’ choices

SEDUCTION OF SUCCESS: The contrast of  ‘1’ can also cause a disruption to the being ‘in the groove’, if you start to focus on positive results and begins to think,

These interruptions are a part of life, and when they come you need to be ready to pass a few more tests

What separates the successful from the less so is the ability to pass the tests with regularity and limit the interruptions as much as possible

I KNOW that you all want to achieve your goals I know you all want to swim fast. But let’s be serious here….BEING GREAT ISN’T EASY, it requires sacrifice. It requires doing things other can’t other won’t do

This sport requires consistent commitment – its relentless!

We all want the same thing, 2017 to be a great year for #teamlarne🏊 and all its members collectively and individually, so together, let’s make the new years resolution to train more, train harder, train smarter, to get past the tests when they come (no matter how many times we are tested) and reach those new levels of success in 2017
